Commemorative medal from copper off Nelsons Flagship Foudroyant


A good original circa 1898 Commemorative medal sold on behalf of the 'British & Foreign Sailors Society', made from copper salvaged from Nelson's Royal Navy Flagship 'HMS Foudroyant' which foundered on Blackpool Sands on the 16 June 1897.
The obverse with bust of Nelson in Royal navy uniform and inscribed "Horatio, Viscount Nelson" "Born. 29th. September, 1758. Died. 21st. October, 1805."; impressed to rim with "Regd. No.311490" a Registration, Design and Patent for the year 1898.
The reverse inscribed "Foudroyant. Lord Nelson's Flagship" "Medal Struck From Copper of Vessel After Breaking Up" the centre with embossed representation of the ship in full sail, inscribed with details below "Commenced Building, 1739 Launched At Plymouth April, 1798 Wrecked at Blackpool June, 16th, 1897.". Very good condition and contained in an associated velvet lined fitted leather case from the period but with much later Biro ink inscription to the inside lid "Presented By British & Foriegn Sailors Society".
