WW1 Middlesbrough Special Constable A.R.P. Air Raid Precautions Badge
A rare original First World War period 2nd issue 'Middlesbrough Special Constable A.R.P. pin badge'; large gilt blue enamel title circlet, surmounted by a Victorian style Crown, the centre with the embossed Middlesbrough Coat of Arms' bearing motto 'ERIMUS' (We shall be) granted in 1911; the reverse impressed with maker's details 'Fattorini Bradford' and official low issue number '274'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fitting, no damage to the enamel, gilt finish remains bright. Height approx 45mm.
During the First World War there was no formal 'ARP' (Air Raid Precautions) the home front defense and air raid warnings were primarily handled by the regular police, supported by the Special Constabulary and the military. There was no air raid warnings police officers often had to patrol the streets on bicycles blowing whistles to warn the public. Boy Scouts and buglers were later used to sound the 'All Clear'.
