A very scarce original early Elizabeth II period 'RAF 42 Squadron Royal Air Force Badge gilt and enamel badge', depicting a figure of the Greek mythological figure Perseus, on a terrestrial globe, Latin motto 'Fortiter In Re' (Bravely into action), the reverse impressed with maker's details 'H.W.Miller Ltd. Branston St. B'Ham.18'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no defects to the enamel, gilt finish remains bright.

RAF 42 Squadron was formed in April 1916 operating the BE2 and later RE8 aircraft on the Western Front and Austro-Italian Front. Operating through the interwar years in September 1939 it was flying Vickers Vildebeest and Bristol Beaufort aircraft, later in the war it would operate in the Far East. The post war years saw its role in the maritime reconnaissance flying Shackleton MR2, Nimrod MR1 and later the Boeing Poseidon and Wedgetail aircraft.
