A very rare original First World War period 'St John V.A.D. Transport Southport pin badge'; large blue enamel gilt title circlet, white enamel Maltese cross to voided centre with red enamel shield bearing the initials 'SJAA' (St John Ambulance Association) to each corner. Very good condition, original pin fittings, no damage to the enamel, gilt finish remains bright.
Diameter approx 35mm.

The 'St John Ambulance Association' was founded in 1877 to provide first aid training.
In 1887 'The St John Ambulance Brigade' was founded to provide uniformed medics at public events.
'The St John Ambulance Brigade' and 'The St John Ambulance Association' merged in 1968 to form the 'St John Ambulance'.
