SS Orcades Orient Steam Navigation Company ships wheel badge Sunk by U-172 submarine
A scarce original circa 1936 to 1942 period 'S.S.Orcades Orient Steam Navigation Company gilt and enamel pin brooch', the 'Orient Steam Navigation Company' enamelled flag mounted to the centre of a ship's wheel. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no damage to the enamel.
Diameter approx 27mm.
In 1942 the German submarine U-172 attacked her off South Africa. Orcades crew and gunners fought to fend off the submarine and save their ship, it took U-172 two and a half hours and seven torpedoes to sink her. Orcades' Master, Charles Fox, was decorated by the Crown and Lloyd's of London for his bravery and leadership.
