S.S. German Union Castle Crossed Blue Ensign Flag Badge

A rare original circa early 1900's period fine quality 'S.S. German Union Castle Mail Steamship Company and Blue Ensign flag pin brooch'; a very attractive example in the form of a twisted gilt rope backing, combining crossed flags in red, white blue enamel, resting on blue enamel ribbon title scroll. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no stress mafks or damage to the enamel, an excellent example.

The S.S. German was a passenger and cargo ship built by Harland & Wolff in 1898. In 1900 it was transferred to the Union-Castle Mail S.S. Company. During the Boer War, it served as a troopship and later in World War I, it was converted into a hospital ship and renamed Glengorm Castle due to anti-German sentiment.The ship continued to serve as a hospital ship and troopship before returning to intermediate service in 1925, eventually being scrapped in Rotterdam in 1930
