A rare original King George VI period gilt and enamel badge, depicting a fox's mask and motto 'Leads The Field', the reverse impressed with maker's details 'H.W.Miller Ltd Branston St B'Ham.18'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no damage to the enamel, gilt finish remains bright.
Height approx 33mm.
At the outbreak of the Second World War RAF No 12 Squadron operated the outdate Fairey Battle light bomber. Posted to France as part of the RAF Advanced Air Striking Force, on the 12th May following the German Blitzkrieg the squadron was briefed for a bombing raid on the bridges near Maastricht to stem the German advance. The operation meet some success, but at a cost of six aircraft despatched only one returned. The lead pilot was Flying Officer Donald Edward Garland and along with his Navigator Sergeant Thomas Gray both were awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously for attacking the bridge at Veldwezelt. The Wireless Operator Air Gunner Leading Aircraftman Reynolds who was also killed received no recognition for his gallantry.
