A scarce original circa 1963 period full sized 'Proficiency in Red Cross Nursing badge'; gilt and enamel example the reverse with maker's details 'J.R.Gaunt London'. Very good condition complete with original silk ribbon with reverse colours and suspension bar with pin fittings, no damage to the enamel, a good clean example.
In 1963 a red ribbon with two white stripes was introduced to mark the higher standard required under the new qualifying regulations of 1962. The possesion of this new ribbon denoted that the wearer had performed a minimum of 44 hours practical nursing service. This was worn by any officer or VAD member who had obtained:
1) a Nursing proficiency badge certificate (with practical experience) after 1 January 1962
2) a Nursing profieciency bar certificate after 1 January 1962 (minimum of 44 hours pratical experience)
3) a Nursing profiency bar ( blue, introduced 1947) certificate
