A scarce original circa 1949 period 'Rotunda Hospital maternity nurse pin badge'; Crowned Celtic cross, the top arm with 'Maid of Erin harp', the lower with '1745' the sides with 'B' and 'M' after the founder 'Bartholomew Mosse'; the title circlet inscribed 'Rotunda Hospital' with motto 'Solamen Miseris' (Solace of the Helpless), the centre embossed with classical figure of woman and babes; the reverse impressed with Dublin silver hallmarks for 1949 and maker's details 'L.A.W' (West & Son Grafton Street, Dublin) 'TO DO MY DUTY' with official issue number '1760'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings.

The Rotunda Hospital is a maternity hospital and a training centre situated in Parnell Street, Dublin, Ireland, founded as the Dublin Lying-In Hospital in 1745 by the surgeon Bartholomew Mosse. It was granted by Royal Charter on 2 December 1756 by King George II.
