WW1 Womens Royal Naval Service WRNS Nelson Admiralty badge
A very scarce original First World War period 'Women's Royal Naval Service WRNS badge'; large pewter plated rope edged Crowned hollow oval made from two parts, resting in a laurel wreath with 'Admiralty' scroll below, the centre with raised figure of 'Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson' in full uniform. Good condition, complete with original pin fittings, service wear to the plated finish.
Height approx 48mm.
The Admiralty badge was worn in the First World War by the WRNS working in the Admiralty and WRNS Headquarters before their official uniform had been issued. Accompanied by a photocopied letter from the 'National Maritime Museum' dated 7 November 1978 stating that the above information had recently come to light.
