Canadian Memorial Cross CEF 6th Bn Canadian Railway Troops

A good original Canadian Memorial Cross medal awarded to the next of kin of James Henry Bell who died aged 37 on 8th February 1919 of influenza. The reverse inscribed '1090117 Spr. J.H. Bell' and impressed 'STERLING' with '3' within a 'C' for the maker's 'Caron Brothers Montreal'. Very good condition, complete with paper envelope inscribed: 'DOMINION OF CANADA Silver Cross given to mothers of soldiers who died on Service with the Canadian Expeditionary 1914 -18'. THIS IS IN VERY FRAGILE CONDITION.

Sapper James Henry Bell was husband of Louisa Bell, Stells, Ontario, he served with 6th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops. He died on the 8th February, 1919 and is buried in the Saint Marie Cemetery, Le Havre.

Formed in March 1916 as the 228th Battalion under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Archibald Earchman.
Redesignated as 6th Battalion Canadian Railway Troops on 8 March 1917.
Arrived in France 2 April and 2 May 1917.
Demobilized at London, Ontario.
Disbanded by General Order 196 of 1 November 1920.
