WW1 National War Savings Committee badge
A scarce original First World War period 'National War Savings Committee badge'; square brass lightly silvered example inlaid with black enamel, the border decorated with pound shilling and pence symbols '15'6' and '£1', chains and title 'Naional Savings'; the centre inappropriately depicting a swastika symbol subsequently abandoned by the committee in later years, the reverse impressed with maker's details 'A.Wylie & Co. London'. Very good condition, complete with original buttonhole lapel fittings, no damage to the enamel, minor service wear to silvered finish. Size 20 x 20mm. The National Savings Movement was established in 1916, to both reduce borrowing and to raise funds for the war effort. It continued until 1978 when it was dropped, due to lack of financial support from the government and the banking industry.
