WW1 Newport Monmouthshire Prisoner Of War gold tribute medal
A rare original First World War period Welsh 'Newport Tribute Medal for the Returning Prisoners of War 1914 - 1918', the reverse inscribed 'PRISONER OF WAR' 'NEWPORT IS PROUD OF YOU'; impressed with Birmingham 9 carat gold hallmarks for 1918 and maker's details 'J.M' (Joseph Moore). Good condition, complete with gold suspension ring, minor service wear.
Height without ring 37mm.
On the 16th January 1919 the people of Newport honoured it's returning heroes, the men of the town and surrounding area who had been captured by the Germans and held as Prisoners of War. At a reception held at the Town Hall by the Newport Prisoners of War Committee some 350 ex POW's attended. Many of these from the 1st Bn The Monmouthshire Regiment who had been captured on the 8th May 1915. Each man was presented with the gold medal pinned to his chest by the Mayor Mr. H.C. Parfitt.
