RAF No 615 County of Surrey Battle of Britain Squadron badge
A rare original circa 1940's period 'Royal Air Force Battle of Britain No 615 Squadron 'Churchill's Own' gilt and enamel badge', depicting a six pointed star with oak sprig and Latin motto 'Conjunctis viribus' (By our united force), the reverse impressed with maker's details 'H.W.Miller Ltd Branston St B'Ham 18'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, no damage to the enamel.

RAF 615 (County of Surrey) Auxiliary Air Force Squadron was formed in 1937 as an Army Co-operation Squadron, however its role was to change to a fighter squadron with the introduction of the Gloster Gauntlets and at the outbreak of WW2 they were flying the Gloster Gladiator biplane fighter aircraft. converting the Hawker Hurricane. It was with this type that it fought during the Battle of Britain. The Squadron was posted to India and Burma flying the Spitfire. In 1945 the Squadron now operated the the Republic Thunderbolt and following the surrender of Japan the Squadron was disbanded. With the reactivation of the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, No. 615 Squadron was reformed on 10 May 1946 again with Spitfires and would enter the jet age with the Gloster Meteor before its finial disbandment in 1957. Sir Winston Churchill was appointed Honorary Air Commodore in 1939.
