WW1 QMNG Highgate War Hospital Supply Depot official badge & armband named
A very rare original First World War period combination of a 'Queen Mary's Needlework Guild Official's gilt and enamel medal', the badge suspended from a red and wihite silk ribbon and enamel suspension bar inscribed 'Highgate W.H.S.D' (War Hospital Supply Depot); together with a rare pink silk covered armband with enbroidered 'O', this with ink inscription to the inside 'Mrs A Jamson Surgical Dressing Room'. The badge is in very good condition, with original curled ended pin fitting, ribbon intact, very minor defects to the enamel. There are the remains of some thread wound round the ribbon which I have left untouched.
The ARMBAND is in very FRAGILE condition, with the silk covering shot and large patches missing revealing the inner lining, all three press studs fasteners remain.
The Queen Mary's Needlework Guild came into being after just a few days into the Great War, when Queen Mary's issued a letter on the 4th August 1914 through the Press, to the Women of the Empire asking that it might be rendered 'To alleviate all distress occasioned by the War!' which was the purpose of the guild to provide comforts and create articles of clothing and surgical equipment as well as other gifts to the troops fighting for King and Country at home and abroad.
