RAF No 138 Squadron Royal Air Force Badge circa 1940s
A scarce original King George VI period 'No 138 Squadron Royal Air Force' gilt and enamel badge, depicting a sword in bend, the point uppermost, severing a reef knot and motto 'For Freedom', the reverse impressed with maker's details 'H.W.Miller Ltd Branston St B'Ham.18'. Very good condition, complete with original pin fittings, enamel perfect, gilt finish remains bright. An excellent example.

RAF No 138 Special Duties Squadron was reformed in 1941 and was the first of the RAF Special Duties squadrons tasked with the duty of suppling the various agents and Resistance units operating behind German lines in occupied Europe. From October 1941 all free Polish aircrews were posted into the Squadron. The Squadron operated throughout the war on occasions undertaking bombing operations with 3 Group Bomber Command and was disbanded in 1950.
Reformed once more five years later it operated the Vickers Valiant Strategic Nuclear Bomber it flew operational during the Suez Crisis It was finally disbanded on the 1st April 1962.
