WW1 The Guards Sunderland 1914 volunteer training corps VTC badge
A very rare original First World War period 'The Guards Sunderland 1914 badge'; large gilded brass shield inlaid with patriotic red, white and blue enamel around a central recessed disc with embossed brass lighthouse, the top tip dipicting a sextant within a heraldic shield, surmounted by a ball on torse and horseshoe scroll below bearing the Latin motto 'Nil Desperandum Auspice Deo' (With God as our leader there is no cause for despair); the reverse impressed with maker's details "Vaughtons Ltd Birm" Good condition, retaining original early style round buttonhole fitting, enamel loss to bottom right, service wear to gilt finish, back to brass.
