A scarce original circa 1935 'Widecombe Fairr' promotional song badge; silver plated example depicting a farmers grey mare horse with seven country bumpkins in character costume riding on its back; the reverse with maker's details "H.W.Miller Ltd 118 Branston St. B'Ham.18" "Regd 791733" a Registered Design and Patent date of 1934. Very good condition, retaining original pin fittings, no stress marks or damage to the enamel.
Height 21mm.
'Widecombe Fair' is a well-known Devon folk song about a man called Tom Pearce, whose horse dies after someone borrows it to travel to the fair in Widecombe with his friends. The chorus ends with the names of seven men travelling to the fair: "Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan'l Whiddon, Harry Hawke, Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all."
