TUC For Organising Services Tolpuddle design award union badge
A very good original example of a 'Trade Union Congress Award badge' hexagonal gilded brass example depicting a sailing ship below a night sky bearing 'Crux constellation' or the 'Southern Cross' in blue and green enamel, title scroll "For Organising Services" above in white enamel "T.U.C" below, the reverse impressed with maker's details "Frank Cobb & Co Sheffield". Very good condition, retaining original buttonhole fittings, enamel perfect minor surface scratches, gilt remains bright.

The Tolpuddle Martyrs were a group of six 19th century Dorset agricultural labourers who were arrested for swearing a secret oath as members of the Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers. They were tried, convicted and transported to Australia for the crime of trying to form a union.
