An original late Second World War period very scarce cardboard economy badge for "Housewives W.V.S Somerset Section". Good condition, retaining original safety pin fitting, minor scuffs.

The W.V.S Housewives Service was originated in Barnes in the early 1940's and quickly spread throughout the London Region and later the country, these on-call local women volunteers who had detailed knowledge of the residents of their streets, could be called upon to assist ARP Wardens with the care of the casualties after an Air Raid attack and before the arrival of the first aid services.
