A scarce original circa 1940's period 'Royal Air Force No 66 Spitfire Squadron gilt and enamel badge', depicting a rattlesnake motif and Latin motto "Cavete Praemonui" (Beware I have warned), the reverse with maker's details "H.W.Miller Ltd Branston St. B'Ham.18". Very good condition, retaining original pin fittings, enamel perfect.

'66 Fighter Squadron' of the Royal Air Force was reformed in 1936. In November 1938 it swopped it’s Gloster Gauntlet biplane fighter aircraft for the new Supermarine Spitfire. In May 1940 operating from the south of England it flew operationally over the skies in France and helped cover the Dunkirk evacuation. It was operational through out the 'Battle of Britain'. It remained a fighter unit based in the UK until the D-Day landings, when it followed the army through France, Belgium and Holland operating for forward airstrips.
