Boer War HRH Princess Christians Trained Nurses named silver medal


A very rare unmarked silver nurses' medal dating from the Boer War; ornate quatrefoil design, the voided centre bearing 'Princess Helena cypher' Crowned "HAV" 'Helena Augusta Victoria' (Princess Christian of Schleswig-Holstein by marriage), the reverse inscribed "Eleanor Johnson". Very good condition, complete with suspension ring.
Height 43mm.

'Miss Eleanor Johnson' was born in London in 1864 and was the daughter of sculptor 'Matthew Hawkins Johnson'. She began her nursing in about 1890 working as a Day Nurse in the 'Fulham Union Infirmary', at the outbreak of the Boer War in 1899 she volunteered her services to the 'Princess Christian’s Nursing Service'. Embarking to South Africa in 1900 she was originally attached to the 'No. 1 General Hospital at Wynberg' in the Cape, before transferring to No. 10 Stationary Hospital at Naauwport, this having 377 beds available for sick and wounded. Here she was appointed a Sister. For her services in South Africa she was awarded the 'Queen’s South Africa Medal and King’s South Africa Medal'.
