Somerset Hospital Cape Town 1959 centenary badge
A good original post 1959 'South African hospitaal commemorative badge'; from a bronze safety pin device depends a large circular bronzed medal bearing in high relief a cross superimposed with early panoramic view of the hospital within, the reverse inscribed "Somerset Hospitaal 1859-1959 Hospital". Very good condition, retaining original pin fittings.
Diameter 38mm.
Cape Governor Sir George Grey laid the cornerstone for the Somerset Hospital on 18 August 1859. In addition to the appointment of medical staff, nurses were recruited from the Florence Nightingale School of Nursing and Midwifery, St Thomas' Hospital in London.
