Boy Scouts 1909 to 1922 1st pattern Silver Wolf award
A rare first pattern 'Boy Scout Silver Wolf Award' believed to have been issued to "Norman Smith Esq, 114 Mount View Road, Sheffield 8" when he was a young boy. This unmarked silver award, much larger than the later pattern, comes with a photograph of Norman Smith in 1951 as a middle aged man, smoking a pipe and wearing a Rover Scout Hat, with two other group photographs at scout camp, on the reverse is written "Norman Smith - back right". Accompanying the award is a letter from "The Boy Scouts Association" in reply to one written on behalf of Norman Smith by "Sir Harold West, Kt. Raincliffe, Ecclesfield, Nr. Sheffield, Yorkshire" regarding the wearing of the Silver Wolf won under the old conditions. Very good condition, retaining the original full length silk ribbon, with service wear conducive to the age.
The Boy Scouts Silver Wolf Award was instituted in 1909 as the highest award for boys. To gain it, the boy had to be a King's Scout, have earned 24 proficiency badges and performed some exceptional service to the Boy Scout movement.
In 1922 the requirements for the Silver Wolf were changed when it became the highest award for Leaders.
