A rare 'Absent-Minded Beggar Fund' silver butter knife, depicting the defiant figure on 'A Gentleman in Kharki' plinth, with "S.Africa 1900" to the rear, the shank with intertwining rifle and flag decoration, the reverse bearing Sheffield silver hallmarks for 1899 and with maker's details "W.WH" (W.W. Harrison & Co, Montgomery Works, Fargate, Sheffield). Very good condition.
Height 137mm.

The 'Absent-Minded Beggar' was a poem by 'Rudyard Kipling' written in 1899 as part of an appeal by the Daily Mail to raise money for soldiers fighting in the South African War. Richard Caton Woodville provided an illustration, titled 'A Gentleman in Kharki' showing a wounded but defiant British soldier, numbers of the poem, sheet music were published and large quantities of related merchandise were sold to aid the charity the 'Absent-Minded Beggar Fund'
