SS Otranto Orient Shipping Line 1929 hallmarked silver spoon
A scarce 'Orient Line, S.S. Otranto' fine quality silver gilt spoon, the shipping line company flag in blue and white enamels, the bowl bearing Birmingham silver hallmarks for 1929 and maker's details "MN & WB" (Mappin & Webb). Very good condition, complete with original velvet lined presentation cardboard box, this with details to the lid "Orient Line To Australia. Steamers' Shops", now with minor age wear, 18mm. gap to side of the lid.
Spoon length 114mm.
S.S.OTRANTO was a England to Australian passenger ship built by Vickers-Armstrong and launched in 1926 for Orient Line (with P&O Line having a controlling interest). She was used as a troopship during the Second World War and afterwards refitted to carry tourist class passengers and resumed London to Australia sailings in 1949, this service continuing until her last voyage in 1957. She was scrapped at Faslane, Scotland.
